First Day Observations

Back again for year three at West Point. I am teaching geography and stud. government. Got lucky with the fourth period prep.

Quote of the day: First let me give some background. I had each kid introduce themselves by saying something interesting about themselves.(I outlaw sleeping and eating.) One girl said "My 15th great grandmother was Pocahontas" (I thought this was pretty cool and was about to say it when...)Her neighbor said, "Is she dead?" I had no reply for that one.

Later in the class the same girl had a light bulb moment stating out loud, "Oh I get it the seating chart is in alphabetical order" Could be a fun year.

Observations--My voice is not in shape yet. I went through two bottles of water just to keep my mouth from getting dry.

Every kid wants to succeed the first day and week. If they could just keep that vision the whole year...

Having never had any of these kids I have no preconceived ideas about them. Don't know the good or bad students yet. Would like to keep it that way--at least not knowing the bad

7th graders and their first day at lunch is a nightmare. And no matter how much they practice the stress gets to them on the lockers.

Thing I like most about the first day is the energy and the light of opportunity. Its bright the first day.

Missed some of my faves from last year. Weird not to have them around.

Love the challenge of memorizing everybody's name the first day. Its something I really like to do. I think it shows each person I am invested. Its interesting to see them pull for me when I am trying to get everyone's name. I sense the near embarrassment when I fail and have to ask. But by the end of each class I was successful. I was having no problem memorizing everybody's name until 6th period. Its like my brain just ran out of room. Was worried I wouldn't make it. One of my favorite activities I do all year. I think it gets me way ahead.

Everyone got out a few minutes early for a creamie. Not a bad way to end it. Now for day 2. Another one of my favorite days.
