So this facebook thing is really blowing up. I know I made comments that it is mainly for college kids, and I still will maintain that they are on it more than any other group, however, it has become a viable option for everyone to keep in touch. I joined up a few weeks ago after some prodding from friends. They all told me it wasn't what I thought and they were able to catch up with old friends. So I joined up. Within a few days I found some old friends, mission buddies, etc. It was nice to see how they are doing. One in particular was my former mission comp, Perez. Not every companion is someone you would hang with apart from the mish, but Perez is definitely one of those guys. We worked and played well together, had a good time and got along great the whole time.
I killed him off in Mangere and we spent three great months together. Funny when I first met him I thought it was cool we had a hispanic elder in the mission. As he says, "My grandfather had a thing for Samoan girls" In June of '95 he went home and despite a few attempts we were never really able to keep in touch. Then I found him on facebook. Surprisingly he now lives here in Utah. We chatted and decided to meet up.
We met up for lunch yesterday at Braza Grill(a much more afforable version of Rodizio, just as good, and a great place for Samoans). It was great to see him and catch up. It had been a long time and both of us are a bit greyer now. It was as if the past 13/14 years melted away, yea things are different, but his is still Perez and I am still Fasi 'oe.
A few things about facebook:
It is funny that you can keep in touch and get a jist to what is going on without having to communicate. It is a little bit strange that way. We can remain friends without doing anything about it.
I can see how it could be addicting
The friend thing is funny to me. I have had requests from a few people I barely knew. Not sure exactly what to do about it. I have always been friendly, but not sure I want to be friends with everyone. Defeats the purpose for me. I can see how a young person would have the need to be friends with everyone and this would mean something to them. For me I want to keep in touch with old buddies, family, and current friends and that's about it.
It allowed me to reconnect with some of my old friends that life got in the way of being close to and that to me makes it worthwhile.
Nice to see ya Perez.
