Champs

I have been coaching at Matheson for four years now. My first year we went 0-7, then 3-4, last year 2-5, but this year we have a truly fantastic team, we are 6-1(the only loss was by one point) we beat four teams we had never beaten before; Jefferson, Valley, Hunter, and Bennion. Before Monday we had never come within 20 points of Bennion. That of course changed Monday. Bennion came in 6-0, we were 5-1, but a win would put us in first, because we would have won the head to head battle. In all honesty I was pretty worried, even our best team, the 3-4 team, got smoked by Bennion 2 years ago. I believed that we could do it, I just didn't know if we would. When I saw Bennion's size I knew we would have a great chance, they were small, and they would have a terrible time trying to guard David and George, which they did. We didn't start out very well, they got up 5-0, but David hit a three and a layup and we were tied. We were tied at the end of the 1st quarter and down one at half. In the 3rd we built up a lead and during the fourth eventually got up by seven. That would be enough. They made a few shots, we missed some free throws, but we still won by three. We ran on the floor and celebrated. It was great! Here was a team that had won 3 games in its best season, 5 in school history, now beating the best team in the league and getting revenge on everyone that we hadn't beaten before. It was a great feeling. It probably would have been better if I was playing, but being a part of it, that was pretty special. It may only be jr. high ball but still it is a team effort and all that practice paid off. It was great for our fledgling school to get some credit and win the division. No matter where all of us end up we will have been part of the first division championship at Matheson.

Here is an interesting twist: Last week with the scorebook problems we faced with Brockbank, we decided to email Hunter's coach and warn them. This was somewhat selfish in that we wanted them to win in case we lost we would finish 2nd as opposed to 3rd. Today Hunter's coach emailed back thankful for the warning and told us he had his managers watch the score like a hawk and they found two descrepancies in the score in the 4th quarter. They won by three points, if even one of those baskets goes the wrong way then it would be a four point swing and they would have lost by one. In a way we made sure they won. Coincedence that it happened twice in a row against teams they needed to beat. I think not, I am not saying they out and out cheated, but I am saying this is way to suspicious to be overlooked as circumstance. Something is definitely fishy. Too fishy. Smells like rotten fish.
