U of U BBall Camp

From 1958 to 1975 before I can really remember, my grandma's brother, James "Bud" Jack was the Athletic Director for the U of U. Since my fam is full of BYU fans this hasn't been made into a big deal, but really it is. He is in the U of U hall of fame the State of Utah hall of fame, the NCAA Hall of Fame, he is a Corbett Award Winner, the highest honor one can receive for athletic administration, he is in the NIT HOF. I mean it seems the list goes on and on, yet no one in my family really talks about it, anyhow here is a picture I found in the Huntsman Center in the Basketball Office.

Now onto camp. I am not sure where to even begin. I will say that I had no idea what I was getting myself into, that much is for certain. Asst. Coach Jeff Smith from Michigan was in charge of our age group. He is your typical no nonsense gravely voiced coach who demands your best. I really liked him, he knew what he was doing, how to teach it, and didn't put up with any crap. Here is his bio

I was assigned the New Mexico Lobos who were not very good, we didn't win a game, but we also probably had the smallest, slowest, uncompetitive team. Despite my best efforts and rants it availed to nothing. I liked the kids on my team, they just weren't as good. They need a better way to divvy up kids than counting off numbers.

Coach Jim Boylen was fantastic. I really liked him a lot. He has a great sense of what needs to be done and how to do it. The team will be much better with him in charge. I really liked the D, boxing out, and his toughness. The U will be much, much better next year. I won't guarantee a conference championship, but I would be surprised if they weren't one of the top teams in the league.

Overall it was really cool to be a part of the U. I really felt like I was in someway a part of the program. It was neat to see all the players and coaches and know the types of things they will be doing next year.
