Hunger Games/Catching Fire

In my effort to read two books a month I got a little bit ahead with some young adult fiction. Kids at the school have been reading the books by Suzanne Collins and raving about it. Janalynn got Hunger Games and liked it, I decided to jump into the world of Panem. After finishing the first book Janalynn asked what I thought and I replied with, "well it is young adult fiction." I liked it, but it is written for a 12-18 year old, not a 35 year old. The main character is Katniss Everdeen and the story is in first person. I am not a fan of first person books. Really the only one I have ever liked was Catcher in the Rye. I like different points of view and at times find first person lacking in commentary. Hunger Games was good, but Catching Fire the second book was great. I didn't need to be a 15 year old to like this one. It was unpredictable, and Collins made the story more compelling and put the main characters in greater peril. I plowed through this book reading it in a weekend. Catching Fire was more what I hoped Hunger Games would have been like, but hey I'll accept that Collins set everything up in the first book. It's not perfect, and first person can get grating at times as well as limited, but overall I like the series. This was a nice start to the new year.
