Guitar Hero 3 came out just about 2 weeks ago. I have been able to play it for the past few days. In many ways it isn't too different from the earlier versions, but there are a few differences.
Here are my thoughts:
I really like the songs for this version. Even the harder songs like One by Metallica are fun to play. Sure they include a few songs that I don't really like, but overall I really like the songs. Cherub Rock is one of my all time favorites, it also includes a few I didn't really know about like Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson and Knights of Cydonia by Muse that are some great tunes that will become classics on the game. Here are some of the other good songs: Sunshine of Your Love, La Grange, Cult of Personality, Bulls on Parade, Welcome to the Jungle, Barracuda, and Evenflow.
To beat the game you have to beat the devil at the song The Devil Went Down to Georgia. I like battle feature. In a way it is a typical video game feature to beat a boss and then move on to the next level. The bosses include Slash and Tom Morello of Rage, and of course the devil. This was a nice addition. The battle feature is great for a group setting. The problem I have always had with playing it in class is that each song is 5-10 minutes long. If you limit kids to 2-3 minutes is just isn't the same. The battle feature allows you to earn attacks like broken string and lefty that smite your opponent and make it hard for them to survive. This feature would really make guitar hero a party favorite.
I have never liked the characters and like them even less now. The women look skanky and the men are all hairdogs or punks. I would have liked to see some new and better ones.
Don't like the star power colors, I have a real hard time seeing the notes on my tv. Makes it so you don't really want to use star power.
I thought the medium was pretty easy. Haven't gone through the whole game on hard, but overall it seems a bit easier than #2, which is fine in my book. I like them challenging but not so its not fun to play.
I really liked the bonus song you get to play while the game runs through the credits. That was a great feature they added, plus its a cool song, pretty challenging.
In all Guitar Hero 3 is bigger and better than 2 but not as great as it could have been. It was much much better than that 80's garbage they came out with in the summer. I would revamp the characters, have more boss battles and more of a variety of songs. Time to get rockin'
