Steve Carell has been one of my favorites for the past few years. I'm not sure if there has ever been a character quite like Michael Scott on the Office. Janalynn and I were trying to decide which movie to see and I told her there was only one worth seeing and I was right. Not sure if there is anything out there worth watching, except Dan in Real Life.
Here is what I liked. Finally a romantic comedy from a guy's perspective. I can't stand most of these 'chick flicks' cause they do not reflect how a guy would react. They usually make the guys out to be some putz who makes some ridiculous mistake and then seeks forgiveness and makes some scene at the end of the movie where he realizes what a fool he has been. That is what I don't like. This movie was fun, but serious and the balance was well played throughout the show.
The situations and circumstances were tough to watch because you could see what it was doing to the characters, but not silly or ridiculous like a Meet the Parents moment.
Carell and Binoche were well cast and did a great job. You could sense their chemistry from the beginning. Dan(Carell) has three daughters who represent my own. Janalynn and I were stupefied at how alike they were to our girls. I even said that that would be me if Janalynn were gone. Luckily she is not and we can deal with the kids together.
In all it was a heartwarming wholesome show. The song about the pig faced girl was a classic. You really felt for Carell in this show, I liked the serious/comedy balance he portrayed instead of the over the top Michael Scott. It was nice to see him be able to pull it off.
Two thumbs up.
